Pumpkin patches near you, by the numbers
FarmHop lists 3,617 US farms, farm stands and agritourism farms that sell pumpkins or are named for their patch, and Kentucky, Minnesota and California have the most. The harvest peaks in September and October, so most patches run through Halloween; call before you drive, because only 2,235 of those listings are currently confirmed live by our checks.
Where the pumpkin farms are
The 15 states with the most pumpkin listings on FarmHop. A listing counts if the place is a farm, farm stand, agritourism farm, u-pick or CSA, isn’t marked closed, and either lists pumpkins as a product or has “pumpkin” in its name.

Growing pumpkins and running a patch aren’t the same thing. Illinois grew about 533 million pounds of pumpkins in 2025, far more than any other state (USDA ERS), yet it has 136 listings here against Kentucky’s 324.
Patch, farm stand, or market?
“Pumpkin patch” covers very different trips. Penn State Extension calls the shift to agritourism (hayrides, pick-your-own patches, corn mazes) one of the biggest trends on pumpkin farms. On FarmHop, 913 of the listings are agritourism farms, the classic day out. Another 564 are farm stands and stores, where you buy pumpkins already picked without a field visit.

How to pick a good pumpkin
- Press the rind.If a fingernail goes in easily, it’s too soft and will only get softer (Chicago Botanic Garden).
- Check for soft spots and fresh wounds, an early sign of rot, and look for even color (NC State Extension).
- Keep the stem on, and don’t carry it by the stem. A broken handle invites rot, so lift from underneath (Chicago Botanic Garden).
- Carve late. A carved pumpkin lasts roughly 8 to 11 days with good care; an uncut one that is cured and stored well can last up to three months (NC State Extension).

Our advice, from running a farm map: confirm the farm is open the day you’re going (October hours change weekly and weekends get busy), ask whether pumpkins are picked from the vine or pre-picked, and bring small bills, since plenty of farm stands are cash-only.
