Cut-your-own Christmas tree farms

Most cut-your-own Christmas tree farms open around Thanksgiving weekend, some earlier in November, so confirm dates with the farm before you go. FarmHop lists 422 US farms that sell Christmas trees or are named for them, across 42 states and territories, with Ohio, Minnesota and North Carolina leading.

An honest caveat: our Christmas tree coverage is thinner than our produce coverage, and only 122 of these listings are currently confirmed live by our checks. Treat it as a starting list, and call ahead.

Where the tree farms are

Where trees are grown is a different map. US farms cut more than 14.5 million Christmas trees in 2022, and more than half came from just two states, Oregon and North Carolina (USDA ERS, 2022 Census of Agriculture).

Choose-and-cut or pre-cut?

231 of the 422 listings are agritourism farms, usually the walk-the-rows, saw-it-yourself kind. Farm stands and stores that list trees may sell them pre-cut. Some farms let you choose a tree but cut it for you, so ask (PickYourOwnChristmasTree.org).

What to bring

  • Rope or bungee cords to tie the tree to your car; farms may not have them or may run out. Saws are usually provided (PickYourOwnChristmasTree.org).
  • Heavy gloves, boots and old clothes (PickYourOwnChristmasTree.org).
  • A tape measure and your ceiling height. Our advice: trees look smaller in a field than in a living room, and the stand and topper add height.
  • A confirmed opening time. Call or email to make sure the farm is open when you plan to arrive.

How to tell a fresh tree, and keep it fresh

  • Run a branch through your hand. On a fresh tree very few needles come off and they bend rather than snap (Ohio State and Iowa State Extension).
  • Tap the trunk on the ground. Heavy needle drop means a dry tree (Iowa State Extension).
  • Make a fresh cut before it goes in water. Half an inch off the base is enough (National Christmas Tree Association). Recut if the tree was cut more than six to eight hours earlier (Ohio State Extension).
  • Keep the stand full. A tree can drink up to a quart a day per inch of trunk diameter. If the water drops below the trunk, the cut seals over and stops absorbing (NCTA; Ohio State Extension).
